About Me

I am a practicing child and adolescent psychodynamic psychotherapist (BACP) with over 25 years’ experience working as a music therapist (HCPC).

I set up my practice to reach out to families with children and adolescents who are struggling with external factors in their life. This can include school avoidance/refusal, low self-esteem, anxiety, bereavement, seeming isolated or withdrawn, struggling with friendships, or having experienced trauma. Specialising in neurodiversity and children who have experienced bereavement or trauma, I work in diverse community settings and welcome all people.

Working as a clinician for over 20 years in a variety of contexts (CAMHS; special needs, mainstream, primary and secondary schools; children centres; music therapy clinic; universities; and private practice) has provided me with a high level of experience with children and adolescents, and adults with a wide range of needs.

My practice is set in a bright room with a variety of toys and materials available. For children age 2 – 12, psychotherapy sessions can involve talking, drawing and play. Adolescents may prefer to talk but can also access art or sensory materials. There is also a range of musical instruments available. Adults can choose to talk or engage in shared musical interaction. For more details on the different approaches I offer, see below.

About psychodynamic psychotherapy:

Psychodynamic psychotherapy can provide a containing space to reflect on relationships, family dynamics, childhood, and attachments. I offer an empathic non-judgmental space for people to talk freely, allowing for unconscious thoughts and feelings to emerge. This approach can develop a person’s capacity to understand and make sense of their difficulties, leading to emotional growth and resilience.

About music therapy:

Music therapy can involve using improvised music (with voice/musical instruments) or words, to develop a therapeutic relationship. Within this music therapy relationship, I respond to, acknowledge, and contain the emotional states of each individual. A session can involve interactive improvisation, structured activities, composing, singing, storytelling, talking and creative play.

For some people they may have a clear idea what form of therapy they would like to engage in. However, if you are unsure, I can offer an integrated approach using psychodynamic thinking/talking along with music therapy. This is something that can be explored during an assessment period.
